The Perfect Christmas Gift for a Poet

The Great Modern Poets

This Christmas, if you’re fortunate enough to have a poet on your gift-giving list, then I might have the perfect present for you: Michael Schmidt’s The Great Modern Poets.  What makes this large, extremely reasonably priced hardcover book the perfect gift is its black and white photo of each poet,  a sampling of their work (which leaves you hungry for more) and the succinct, informative introductory essays of each poet and their work written by Schmidt who is editor of the magazine PN Review and author of another excellent book, Lives of the Poets.  As in any collection, some of the poets selected may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but with fifty poets ranging from Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) to James Fenton (b. 1949) and including Frost, Millay and Dylan Thomas, everyone should find a favorite poet or two.
