Original Poem: “Words”

“Words”

The evolution of language into the art of poetry.

                                  WORDS
In the beginning were mere sounds roughly hewn
From coarse throats and shaped by unwieldy tongues;
Guttural utterances conveying the most basic of needs.
Became a useful tool for naming objects in the world,
Later, to distinguish between things like “hot” and “cold.”

Over time, slowly pooled and coalesced into language
Used to express thoughts and twist a lie into the truth,
Until, one day, the first poet appeared and spun it into thread,
Then wove it into songs out-rivaling that of any bird – transforming
Language into an art that elevates us far above uncivil beasts.
