THE RELIGION OF NATURE
I’d rather hear the songs of woodland birds
Than dusty hymns sung in a church of stone.
I’d rather listen to a babbling brook
Than to the pious homilies of a priest.
I’d rather commune with the mountains
Than with the images of long-dead saints.
I’d rather see the hand of God in the stars
Than painted on a cathedral ceiling.
May my faith be in accordance with Nature divine
Than with man-made religious laws and institutions.
